600 Tapes — Ciara McMahon

This film installation was a commissioned film of a service user at a special needs centre in the midlands of Ireland. I was invited to make the documentary film of the user because 'He has an encyclopedic knowledge of music'. The resulting uncomfortable film deliberately implicates the viewers in the experience of viewing another. The film raises questions around the right to speak when language is difficult and wonders who's discomfort is at stake.

Synopsis: This was a commissioned film of a service user at a special needs centre in the midlands of Ireland. The artist was invited to make the documentary film of the user because 'He has an encyclopedic knowledge of music'. The artist was surprised at the attitude of the commissioners, and the resulting uncomfortable film deliberately implicates the viewers in this questionable attitude. The film raises questions around the right to speak when language is difficult and wonders who's discomfort is at stake.
